Ben Yedder nets brace as Sevilla sinks United

Manchester United suffered a shock exit in the Champions League last-16 with a 2-1 loss to Sevilla after substitute Wissam Ben Yedder struck twice at Old Trafford on Tuesday. The Spaniards, who had never won a Champions League match in England, moved into the quarterfinals of Europes elite club competition for the first time since 1958 having drawn the first leg 0-0. Jose Mourinhos side was stunned by the two late strikes from Frenchman Ben Yedder and although Romelu Lukaku pulled a goal back, Uniteds once-promising European campaign came to a sorry end. Ben Yedder put the visitors in front with a low finish just 87 seconds after coming off the bench in the 72nd minute and scored again with a header that hit the underside of the bar and went in four minutes later. "In spite of the fact we didnt create chances in the first half, we were good, very good, up until the final third, and we gave United very little chance near our goal," said Sevillas Italian manager Vincenzo Montella. "Ben made the difference though, he was decisive, two times." Mourinho added: "I dont think the performance was bad. I did my best, the players did their best. We tried, we lost and thats football. We had chances to score and again in the second half we had chances but the first goal would always change the direction of the game." United were a shadow of the team that beat Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday, with sloppy passing and a lack of shape, urgency and fluency. Questions will be asked as to why Mourinho switched around the team and formation from that game. Marcus Rashford was moved to the right, Alexis Sanchez to the left and Jesse Lingard and Marouane Fellaini brought into midfield for Scott McTominay and Juan Mata. However while United laboured, Sevilla had not looked a real threat in what was a generally poor quality game until the introduction of Ben Yedder with 18 minutes left. After a swift passing move, the forward sprung open the defence with a sharp turn and fired a low shot past David De Gea before doubling Sevillas lead with a back-post header that crossed the line off the underside of the bar despite the keepers efforts. Lukaku volleyed home from close range after Juan Mata had flicked on a corner in the 84th minute but there was to be no comeback for United and the visitors could have added more. Ben Yedder, who now has eight goals from seven games in the Champions League this season, should have claimed a hat-trick when he was sent through one-on-one against De Gea but appeared to freeze and shot tamely straight at the keeper. Roma advance Roma reached the Champions League quarterfinals for the first time in 10 years as Edin Dzeko edged them past Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday and allowed the Italians to win the tie on away goals. The Bosnian strikers 52nd-minute goal proved enough after a 2-1 first-leg loss in Ukraine, with 10-man Shakhtar failing to find the late strike they needed after Ivan Ordets was sent off late on. Cengiz Unders goal in the first leg last month ultimately proved crucial for Roma, but Dzeko was the hero on the night and also proved instrumental in Shakhtar defender Ordets being shown a straight red card with 12 minutes left. That sending-off led to tensions spilling over, with Shakhtars Facundo Ferreyra picking up a booking for shoving a ballboy over an advertising board. Eusebio Di Francescos side is second the second Italian team to advance to the quarterfinals after Juventus, with the draw for the last eight taking place on Friday.
